World Cup Winners

Congratulations to the Germany team that claimed the Junior World Cup yesterday afternoon at Campsie Indoor Football.
In scenes reminiscent of Italia ‘90, they beat Argentina in a thrilling final, only this time by way of a penalty shoot out.
The final group table gave some indication of what was to follow in the knock out stage with Germany defeating Argentina. However Argentina narrowly topped the table on goal difference from their fierce rivals.

In the first semi-final Argentina had a comfortable victory over Brazil despite some wonderful defending from their opponents, most notably from Anna Keys and Andrew. However they suffered a blow that proved quite costly when the impressive Joseph Harnett was injured and subsequently missed the final.

In the other semi-final, Germany had a narrow victory over Spain despite the best efforts of their goalkeeper Ethan and talismanic captain Oscar. (Sounds Brazilian but plays for Spain!)

In a tense final, the large crowd were treated to a marvellous game of end to end football. Germany took the lead in the first half through Sean O’Donnell only for Ryan Deery to equalise mid-way through the second half. Numerous chances were missed by both teams to claim the trophy but ultimately it took the dreaded penalty shoot-out to decide the winners.

Aside from the great football and some brilliant goals, all children are commended for their exemplary behaviour during the past three weeks.
